Their Story

Maia and Yash met 10 years ago on Canada Day through mutual friends. That summer, their friend group became quite close and Maia and Yash began dating. Yash moved to Kingston and they had a long distance relationship for a while. Through this time, they were able to build really strong communication skills and grow their relationship. Yash later moved back to Winnipeg and their love blossomed.

Yash’s family originates from India and Maia’s from Argentina. While Yash was born in Winnipeg, Maia’s family moved to Canada when she was a child. When Maia and Yash started dating, they embraced each other’s culture and together they celebrate each other’s customs and traditions. The respect they have for each other’s culture is truly admirable!

Two years ago, Maia and Yash went to Italy. One evening while they were watching the sunset, Maia said, “Yash, take a picture!” and when she turned around he was down on one knee.

The Wedding

Maia and Yash’s wedding was a beautiful celebration that seamlessly wove together their Hindu and Jewish heritages. It was an incredible experience to witness the richness of both cultures, thoughtfully integrated throughout the day. The couple chose to hold two distinct ceremonies, with a cocktail hour in between—allowing guests to transition from one meaningful tradition to the next.

Hindu Ceremony

Hindu weddings are rich in rituals, often spanning several days. Leading up to the big day, Maia and Yash took part in two pre-wedding ceremonies. The Mehndi Ceremony featured intricate henna designs applied to the bride’s hands and feet, symbolizing beauty, joy, and spiritual awakening. Then came the Haldi Ceremony, during which a turmeric paste was applied to both the bride and groom to bless and purify them before their wedding.

On the wedding day itself, the festivities began with the lively Baraat, where Yash made a grand entrance on horseback, accompanied by a drummer and guests dancing joyfully in procession. In the Milni Ceremony, the couple’s parents greeted one another and exchanged garlands, formally uniting their families.

Guests were then welcomed into the ceremony space, where the Pandit (officiant) led a ritual to prepare Yash for the arrival of his bride. After Maia’s processional, the couple participated in the Varmala Ceremony, exchanging floral garlands as a symbol of mutual acceptance.

Most of the Hindu ceremony was conducted in Sanskrit, but its emotional resonance transcended language. During the Mangal Pheras, Maia and Yash circled the sacred fire (Agni) seven times, each round representing a sacred vow and step forward into their life together.

Cocktail Hour

As the Hindu ceremony concluded, guests enjoyed a lively cocktail hour in the foyer while the next space was prepared for the Jewish ceremony. I even had a moment to sneak a bite—and I’m so glad I did! One of the highlights was the 600 hand-made empanadas crafted by Maia’s father, which were an absolute hit!

Jewish Ceremony

The Jewish ceremony took place under a beautifully decorated chuppah, with Maia and Yash each walking down the aisle, accompanied by their parents. In a touching moment of continuity, both sets of parents remained at their sides throughout both ceremonies.

During the Kiddushin (betrothal blessings and ring exchange), the couple recited vows in Hebrew and exchanged rings. They also shared personalized vows, lovingly written by each of them and read aloud by the Rabbi.

A particularly memorable detail was the signing of the Ketubah, their marriage contract, which was printed on an exquisite piece of art they plan to display in their home. As part of the ceremony, loved ones offered the Sheva Brachot (Seven Blessings), followed by Yash breaking a glass—symbolizing the fragility of relationships and commemorating the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. With a joyous “Mazel Tov!” the room erupted in celebration.

The Reception

The evening reception began with a grand entrance and the couple’s first dance, followed by the lively Hora—a traditional Israeli dance that brought everyone to their feet. Guests formed circles around the newlyweds, eventually lifting Maia and Yash high into the air on chairs amidst a sea of dancing and laughter. The Hora is such a spirited and inclusive tradition, and it was amazing to see guests of all backgrounds join in the fun.

Afterward, heartfelt speeches were shared before guests enjoyed a delicious Indian buffet dinner and later, an impressive dessert spread. Once the formalities wrapped up, the dance floor came alive thanks to the incredible Big City All Star Band, who kept the party going late into the night!

Congratulations, Maia & Yash! Your wedding was a stunning fusion of culture, love, and celebration. It was an honour to be a part of it!
